Riverbank Rescue Field Day

August 13, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 3:30 pm

Be a force for nature and help NCC keep the Crowsnest River healthy! Join us as we improve our riparian fence system in an effort to preserve the health of the green zone surrounding the river and reduce the impact on sensitive stream banks.

Located in a grizzly bear movement corridor, NCC’s Block property is both beautiful and highly important for biodiversity. The property is located on the banks of the Crowsnest River, and provides habitat for well-known animals such as elk, eagles, red-tailed hawks, and wild turkeys. More than 35 different species of birds have been identified on the property.

A new electric fencing system has been put in place to prevent cattle from degrading the riparian green zone, but the old barbed wire fence still remains right along the river bank. With this old fence in a degraded state, it is now acting as a wildlife barrier and a hazard to people.

Join us for a hands-on day along the river as we work to remove 800m of wire and clean-up debris from this sensitive habitat. After our day of fencing along the river, we’ll take a well-deserved detour to the Old Dairy Ice Cream Shoppe in nearby Bellevue, a former milk and cheese plant that now serves up over 50 flavours of ice cream. (A popular local stop for NCC staff!) As a reward for everyone’s hard work, the ice cream cones will be on us!
