What a tremendous week we shared in Vancouver! As co-hosts of the SER 2024 North American Conference, the SERNW community was proud to help facilitate a gathering that truly embodied the theme: “Cross-Biome Connections: Ecological Restoration on a Diverse Continent.”
The program was a testament to the incredible breadth of our field, sparking conversations that went far beyond technical methodology. We were deeply inspired by Dr. Jodi Hilty of the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative, whose plenary underscored the critical necessity of large-landscape connectivity and Indigenous leadership in conservation.

This commitment to weaving Traditional Ecological Knowledge with Western science was the heartbeat of the conference. It was evident in workshops exploring River Restoration using Syilx (Okanagan) ecosystem methods and in breakout sessions debating socio-economic stewardship. Seeing over 750 attendees dive into topics ranging from mining impacts in the Yukon to coral reef restoration in Florida reminded us that while our biomes differ, our goals align.
One of the most popular features of the week was our series of field trips, where attendees boarded buses to witness restoration in action. Participants explored local sites like NATS Nursery, British Columbia’s largest native plant nursery, to see the scale of production required for large-scale projects. Others ventured out to Boundary Bay and Sturgeon Bank to examine tidal marsh restoration and climate adaptation strategies firsthand. These excursions were more than just tours; they were opportunities to walk the land together, exchange ideas in the field, and see how theoretical concepts are being applied to enhance resilience in the Pacific Northwest.

Our future looks bright, thanks to the Students and Emerging Professionals who shined during their dedicated career advocacy workshop. To everyone who joined us, including our beloved mascot, Huckleberry, the flying squirrel, thank you for bringing your energy. Whether you were exploring local restoration sites or networking in the halls, you helped make this gathering unforgettable.
We extend our deep gratitude to the sponsors, exhibitors, speakers, volunteers, and members who made this event supportive of ecological restoration that connects our community. We look forward to seeing you at our next event as we continue this vital work together.
