To avoid screen fatigue that is common with virtual meetings and presentations we are planning on holding sessions for a 3 to 4 hour block on five days within this time period.  Our sessions will be scheduled on the following dates:  Monday April 19; Wednesday April 21, Friday April 23; Tuesday April 27, and Thursday April 29, 2021.

Our meeting theme is Restoring Landscapes Renewing the Spirit

Our planned meeting agenda includes the following:

Keynote presentation on Inspiring Conservation and Restoration: Bridging the Gap with Non-profit and Government Partners by Jennifer Windus (Ohio Natural Areas & Preserves Association and Ohio Invasive Plants Council).

-

A sampling of Nancy Aten’s monotypes.

Concluding plenary session on Ensuring the Sustainability of Ohio’s Greatest Natural Resource – Ecological Restoration of Lake Erie.  Presentations by Thomas Bridgeman (University of Toledo Lake Erie Center) and Amy Brennan (The Nature Conservancy in Ohio) will highlight the current science and practice related to the restoration of Lake Erie and how the integration of science and practice related to restoration can ensure its future sustainability.

Choice of two of four symposia:  1) An unexpected opportunity: managing for habitat on rights-of-way and energy and transportation lands; 2) Fore to forest for fins and feathers: a primer on restoring former golf courses; 3)  Building on lessons from the past to forge a new future; 4) The essential roles of invertebrates in Midwestern landscapes

-

Choice of one of two workshops:  1) Integrating data review into ecological restoration, a field perspective – a workshop on best practices for conducting data review during restoration monitoring and 2) Landing a job: résumés, cover letters, and interviews for students and early professionals.

-

54 contributed oral and poster presentations:  We currently have presenters from 7 states (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin, Virginia) who will share their experiences involving prairie, forest restoration, stream, wetland, and oak savanna restoration.  Presentation topics include effects of prescribed fire on pollinator species, American elm restoration, use of rain gardens in urban areas, restoration within the Oak Openings region, and more!  Please note we have a limited number of oral presentation and poster presentation slots available.  If you are interested in giving a contributed oral or poster presentation then email Rocky Smiley at smiley.54@osu.edu ASAP.

A virtual sponsorship reception and poster session: We are planning to hold a virtual sponsorship reception and give attendees a chance to view sponsorship exhibits, poster presentations, and to socialize.

Continuing Education Credits Additionally, we will be applying for approval to offer continuing education credits from the Society for Ecological Restoration, the International Society of Arboriculture and the Society of American Foresters.   Once we receive approval to offer continuing education credits from these other organizations we will post the available credits offered on our Annual Meeting Webpage and will provide a meeting passport for tracking attendance and independently seeking professional development hours.
