Hello members and friends,

As the year (decade!) gets off to a fresh new start, I am writing to convey my very best wishes for 2020 and sincere thanks for your support in 2019.

2019 was a great year for SER-WC. We held a fantastic AGM and Fall Forum in Saskatoon, with two full days of informative restoration learning. We welcomed five (5!) new Directors to our board. We’ve significantly expanded our network on social media hubs, launched a new website improving our organizational design and functionality. With our new Directors, we are very much looking forward to launching even more new exciting initiatives.

It has been a certainly busy year across the country. With the federal Canadian election comes some large promises that could certainly shine a bright light on restoration. The Prime Minister’s Mandate Letter to the Ministers of Environments and Natural Resources highlights a goal to plant two billion trees in the next ten years, and also to protect 25% of Canada’s land and sea by 2025.

In fact, folks have been busy with restoration across the world as well! A few notable highlights include the 2019 World Conference on Restoration which took place in South Africa in September where SER International released the 2nd edition of the International Principles & Standards for the Practice of Ecological Restoration, which are available here. In fact, SER is hosting a FREE webinar describing the new standards which you can register for here.

Speaking of WEBINARS! SER-WC is very proud to announce our own webinar series!!! We will be providing regular webinars throughout 2020 to members highlighting current topics in restoration. The first one will be on Tuesday January 28th and is presented by our very own Alex Blais-Montpetit. Stay tuned for details.

Until next time.

Your Chair,

Erin Roberts
