Weeding the Wetlands

August 8, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Come spend a few hours removing Common Tansy and Common Burdock from the banks of a marsh in the Riding Mountain Natural Area followed by some birdwatching on the lake. Because these pesky weeds are growing so close to the wetlands they can’t be controlled by chemical or mechanical means, so elbow grease it is!

Both these species can forms dense stands which outcompete other plants. They are both problematic in pastures as they can impact the productivity of grasslands and be harmful to livestock.  Burs may cause irritation to livestock that pick them up, while Common Tansy contains toxic compounds that may pose a health risk if eaten or absorbed through skin contact. Help us make these species a little moreuncommon then enjoy some birdwatching on the many marshes and the small lake that make up the property.

A simple lunch will be provided. Rubber boots are not required, but volunteers are urged to bring them along if they have them, long pants are highly recommended. Water, sun-screen, bug spray and gloves will be provided. The event will be postponed if there is heavy rain, but may proceed if it is light. Note: Poison ivy is present in the area, if you are not familiar with its appearance be sure to ask staff to point it out.
