Thistle Removal Field Day

July 18, 2015 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Join us at Clifford E. Lee Nature Sanctuary as we celebrate 10 years of success in the fight against creeping thistle!

For the past 9 years Conservation Volunteers have preserved in the fight against invasive species at Clifford E. Lee. Over this time, their continued efforts have led to the recovery and naturalization of many areas of the sanctuary that were formerly overrun with thistle. This has had a hugely positive impact on the health of the local wetlands and meadows!

The varied habitats of the 348 acre sanctuary attract a diversity of animals, including more than one hundred bird species. There is a network of boardwalk and connected upland trails winding throughout the sanctuary, so the site is easily accessible for visitors of all ages and skill levels.

Together we’ll spend the morning pulling thistle, then celebrate 10 years of success over a free picnic lunch! In keeping with tradition we’ll also be serving up a round of appetizers made from edible invasive species for all to enjoy. Recipes will be provided, so you can make your favourites at home! Dandelion chips anyone?

As part of the day you’ll also have the opportunity to get a sneak peak of Bunchberry Meadows, a project the Nature Conservancy of Canada is trying to conserve only 10 minutes west of the Clifford E. Lee Nature Sanctuary.
