Tending the Garry Oak Preserve
30 December 2015 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm MST
Cowichan Garry Oak Preserve
Duncan, Vancouver Island, BC
Volunteer events in the Cowichan Valley are aimed at tending the endangered Garry oak habitat found here. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, planting native species, tackling invasive species like Scotch broom, observing birds while enjoying the company of other nature lovers please join us.
THIS EVENT OCCURS EVERY WEDNESDAY.
This property was formerly the Elkington family farm, in the family since the 1860’s. Their vision to keep much of the farm undisturbed resulted in one of the largest, most intact Garry oak woodland meadows on Vancouver Island.
Special features: Globally rare Garry Oak ecosystems
Directions: Travel east on Trunk Road. At the roundabout, exit at Maple Bay Road. Follow Maple Bay for 4 kms, turn left onto Aitken Road. The Cowichan Garry Oak Preserve is at the end of Aiken Road on the right. Meet at the green house visible from the road. Equipment will be provided. Please bring warm clothes, rain gear, snacks, water, and gardening gloves (if you have them).
