Prairie Seed Harvest

September 12, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Join NCC staff in harvesting native seed in the Tall Grass Prairie Natural Area for NCC’s prairie restoration project. Volunteers will harvest everything from wildflowers to grasses using a combination of hand-picking and handheld harvesters. While much of the seed can be harvested by machine, certain species are missed due to their dispersal method, the timing of seed set, or access issues in wetter areas. After the harvest, hike along NCC’s Agassiz Interpretive Trail.

This natural area represents the largest remaining intact block of Tall Grass Prairie in Canada, and supports a number of At Risk species including the Poweshiek Skipperling butterfly and Western Prairie Fringed Orchid.  Help us in reclaiming this amazing habitat and learn more about the many species that call it home.

A light lunch and beverages will be provided. The event will be postponed if the weather is rainy. Gloves, bug spray and sunscreen will be provided.  Closed-toe footwear and long pants are highly recommended as you will be walking in tall vegetation.
