Plant Identification Workshop
18 May 2016 - 19 May 2016
May 18-19th, 2016. Salmon Arm. Plant Identification Workshop with Ken Marr, Royal BC Museum and Okanagan College
In this workshop, plant taxonomist Ken Marr from the Royal BC Museum will teach us about basic plant identification through recognizing common plant families (vs. species and genus) that are used in many guides. Many species of the B.C. flora, approximately 80%, belong to ca. 25 of the larger families. In this course, we will learn to recognize about 15 of the plant families, including the grass family, depending on time and availability of material. The workshop will review basic terminology, the use of plant identification ‘keys’ using fresh plants and 2-3 features by which many plant families can be recognized. The workshop is suitable for participants with no background in plant identification, as well as those that would like a refresher in plant family identification and use of guides. It is recommended for invasive plant field staff, biologists with an interest in plant identification, field technicians, and other interested participants. A huge thank you to Okanagan College for partnering to provide a biology lab for this workshop! To register, email: info@columbiashuswapinvasives.org
