Flow and Grow! – Balancing Economy, Ecology and Settlement in the Okanagan

November 29, 2016

Course Description:

Towards Water Sustainability – A workshop on HOW to respect ecosystem and cultural values, ensure food security and build water-resilient communities.

The new Water Sustainability Act requires water managers to consider environmental flow needs when issuing new licences.  First Nations are concerned about the erosion of their cultural values with respect to fish and water.  Summers are getting warmer and longer, and less water may be available under a changing climate, yet the economic activity in the region is expanding.  Tourism demands are increasing, more people are moving to the valley and the region is a key part of British Columbia’s food security plans.  How are we to balance all of these factors but still maintain a healthy water balance in the valley?  This workshop will explore the nexus that is fast approaching and how collaboration can support practitioners and decision makes to take action at a local level.
