Ayum Creek Work Party

April 29, 2017

On Saturday, April 29th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., please join TLC at Ayum Creek Regional Park Reserve in Sooke to continue our experimental restoration efforts combating the invasive species periwinkle (Vinca minor).

We will be layering cardboard on cut periwinkle, and then spreading wood chips on top to effectively smother it. This technique is an adaptation of “lasagna gardening,” where soil is built by adding different layers of material, reducing the need to till which can break up the healthy networks of mycelium and microbes within. By smothering the invasive species with materials that will break down and feed the soil, we are hopeful that the invasive species will be beat and native species can reign supreme once more!

Tools, gloves and instructions will be provided. If you have cardboard (tape, staples and other non-organic materials removed please), please bring it along!

Please RSVP to covenants@conservancy.bc.ca or call (250) 479-8053 to find out our meeting place details.  Carpooling is available, just let me know and we will do our best to get you out there!
