Risk Assessment Fundamentals: Framework, Principles and Methods of Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment

September 22, 2014 - September 23, 2014

*Webinar Available*

How many times have you wrestled with sites that have contamination which exceed the numerical standards and require risk-based cost effective remediation? The scientific principles of contaminated site risk assessment are simple, yet their successful completion is often elusive; and navigating the deep waters of regulatory guidance can be daunting.

Learn how to conduct better risk assessments, to support effective risk-based remediation solutions. The “Fundamentals and beyond” risk assessment workshop starts with the fundamental requirements of site characterization and understanding, upon which any risk assessment is so dependent. Learn to identify data gaps and derive the problem formulation and take the conceptual risk model through quantitative steps of human health and ecological risk assessment.

This highly interactive two-day workshop uses many real world examples and the latest concepts in adult learning to put you into the critical learning zone, gaining competency in the assessment and interpretation of human health and environmental risks, and in the communication of your findings.  Working in small groups, you will:

  • draw conceptual models,
  • estimate exposures,
  • determine toxicity reference values,
  • characterize risks, and
  • discuss uncertainty in risk estimates.

Through strategically linked lecturettes, you will gain an understanding of current and innovative approaches to risk assessment and risk management.

Workshop Topics:

  • Importance of a robust site characterization
  • Identification of data gaps
  • Problem formulation and screening level risk assessment
  • Validation of data quality
  • Statistical evaluation of site contamination
  • Exposure modeling
  • Toxicity (hazard) assessment
  • Risk characterization
  • Uncertainty analysis

At the end of this course, you will:

  • Understand why robust site investigations matter and be better able to identify weaknesses that should be addressed
  • Be better equipped to develop a problem formulation and complete a risk assessment
  • Know how to draw upon your understanding of the “Big Picture” when taking part in developing better solutions for site remediation and risk management
