ISCBC Fall Workshop & Special Members Meeting

November 24, 2016 @ 9:30 am - 5:00 pm

Location: Pacific Gateway Hotel, Richmond, BC.

Time: 9:30 am – 5:00 pm

Join us to help determine future priorities and needs in BC for effectively preventing and managing invasive species and their impacts to BC’s landscapes.  A special feature is an update on the challenges and needs for managing soil infested with invasive species, such as European Fire Ants, Knotweeds or Giant Hogweed.

Landscape architects, developers and local governments will have special interest in the soil workshop along with non-profit organizations, governments and Aboriginal organizations, who will all want to participate in this session! View the agenda here.

Overview:

  1. Digging into Soil – get updated on the work of a recently created Provincial & Local Government ‘Soils and Invasive Species Working Group’. The working group is addressing the challenge of high risk invasive species movement in soils and related materials. Learn more about this invasive species vector and provide input on what additional tools, research or best practices are needed to reduce the spread of invasive species through soil movement.
  2. Moving Forward on the Invasive Species Strategy of BC – help set the stage about what is needed over the next 5 to 10 years on effective prevention and management of invasive species within BC.  Whether it is new funding approaches, clearer regulation, improved research or enhanced communication and education – your input and direction is valued.

Special Members Meeting:

All members of the Invasive Species Council of BC are invited to join us and vote on proposed changes to the bylaws and constitution.

With the pending new Society Act regulation along with calls to streamline the Board structure, this meeting will review proposed changes to the current bylaws including:

  • Updating and addressing conflict of interest as required under the pending regulation;
  • While maintaining the valued diversity of the current Board structure, updating the structure to retain the government, community and business focus while enabling more flexibility to reflect the breadth needed for invasive species and emerging pathways, such as trade;
  • Enabling electronic or virtual Board and member meetings using today’s current technology.
