Workshop: How to Get What You Want and Stay Out of the Weeds!

April 7, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

How to Get What You Want and Stay Out of the Weeds!

April 7, 2016, 9 AM to 4 PM, Longmont Colorado

Stemming from this fall’s well-attended Southern Rockies Seed Network meeting, this training is provided by

  • Steve Popovich, US Forest Service Botanist;
  • Christine Taliga, Natural Resources Conservation Service Plant Materials Technical Advisor to the National Park Service; and
  • Randy Crowl, Seed Analyst, Colorado Seed Lab.

This one-day workshop focuses on how to order seed, select native varieties appropriate for your ecosystem, understand the information on seed bag labels, interpret seed lab purity and noxious weed analysis results, and how to request seed test analyses to meet your needs. In short – how to confirm you are getting what you paid for, both in quality and quantity — and not getting any surprises! Try your hand at taking samples from a seed bag, determining which samples contain hidden weeds, and testing for seed viability under a microscope.

Information provided in this workshop is critical to seed ordering success. It is technical and intended for professional land managers and restoration practitioners, but is open to anyone who orders native seed and/or seeds native landscapes. The workshop is expected to fill to capacity, so please register early, and commitment to attendance is expected. The workshop has no fee and is sponsored by the US Forest Service, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the National Park Service, and is endorsed by the Colorado Native Plant Society.
