Fire and forest restoration: Is there a silver bullet?

Presented by Jennifer Briggs, US Geological Survey – Denver

_______________________________________________________________

What is forest restoration? How does it relate to fire risk reduction? Who does it, when and where? Are there “best practices” or silver bullet solutions? How can local residents get involved?

Join us from 6:30PM – 9PM on May 3 at New Terrain Brewing in Golden as Jenny Briggs (USGS, Denver) addresses these questions and more about fire and forest restoration in the Front Range. Free admission and appetizers provided, cash bar available. Food, beer, and ecological restoration!

Many of Colorado’s vital resources – from snow sports to wildlife habitat to clean water to great beer – are derived from ecosystem services provided by our forests. However, many disturbances both natural (such as wildfire and insect epidemics), and human-caused (such as changes in land use and management) can disrupt these key processes and outcomes. This talk will explore the scientific and social sides of diverse forest restoration projects underway in the Front Range that have the goal of making our ecosystems and communities more resilient to disturbance. Current projects range from the local to the national scale, and represent collaborative efforts between resource managers, researchers, and numerous stakeholders/partners – including breweries and businesses.

Jenny Briggs has worked with the US Geological Survey since 2008 as a Research Ecologist based in Denver. She obtained a B.A. in Human Biology at Stanford University and a Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology at the University of Nevada, Reno. Her research investigates the interaction between ecological and human-caused disturbances in forested ecosystems – the effects of processes such as insect epidemics, fire, and forest management (e.g. restoration, fuel reduction, and prescribed burning). She works collaboratively with management agency partners and educators on questions of concern to resource management decisions in Colorado, and participates in several regional and national interagency research-management teams.
