The New England Chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER-NE) encourages student attendance at the conference and offers the following resources to support student participation.

Poster presentations

Students are encouraged to show posters as part of an early evening “poster pub,” which enables interaction between poster presenters and the other conference attendees. No talks will be held during the poster session. Prizes will be awarded to the top student posters, as judged by a professional and academic panel. To show a poster, submit an abstract by Saturday, October 1.

Conference volunteering

Volunteering is an opportunity to interact with the conference organizers and attendees. Working as a volunteer is also one of two ways that students can qualify for a registration fee waiver grant. There are a number of positions available for student volunteers such as registering attendees, assisting session moderators, or setting up rooms. Contact Grace Cambareri if you are interested in volunteering.

Lunchtime discussion: Increasing student engagement in ecological restoration

We invite students to join established academics and professionals in the field of ecological restoration for lunch on Friday. Together, we will discuss student needs for engagement in the theory and practice of ecological restoration. We are particularly seeking to identify specific actions that SER-NE can take to support students. This is an opportunity to build relationships with other students, professionals, and academics, as we all work together to enhance ecological restoration in New England.

Participation in this lunch conversation does not require any pre-registration before the conference, and lunch is included in the registration fee (or fee waiver, for grant recipients). Details on the lunch location will be provided on the day of the conference.

Grants – NOTE: ALL GRANTS HAVE BEEN AWARDED.

The Chapter is offering a limited number of student grants to help defray the cost of attending the 2016 SER-NE regional conference. There are two categories of grants: registration fee waiver grants and travel grants.  Eligible students may apply for and receive both grants. To be eligible, an applicant must be: (1) a full-time undergraduate or graduate student; (2) a student member of SER; and (3) contributing to the conference such as by presenting a talk/poster or by volunteering (specifics depend on the grant).

Grant applications received by August 29th (midnight) will have full consideration, and decisions will be provided by September 2nd. Review of grant applications submitted after August 26th will continue on a rolling basis until all grants have been awarded.

Please note that many colleges and universities provide funding for students to attend conferences, especially if presenting a talk or poster.  We encourage students to explore this additional avenue of support.
