{"id":4681,"date":"2017-04-21T17:46:15","date_gmt":"2017-04-22T01:46:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/serchapter2018.wpengine.com\/westerncanada\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;p=4681"},"modified":"2017-04-21T17:46:15","modified_gmt":"2017-04-22T01:46:15","slug":"ayum-creek-work-party","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/chapter.ser.org\/westerncanada\/event\/ayum-creek-work-party\/","title":{"rendered":"Ayum Creek Work Party"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>On Saturday, April 29th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., please join TLC at Ayum Creek Regional Park Reserve in Sooke to continue our experimental restoration efforts combating the invasive species periwinkle (<i>Vinca minor<\/i>).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We will be layering cardboard on\u00a0cut periwinkle, and then spreading wood chips on top to effectively smother it. This technique is an adaptation of \u201clasagna gardening,\u201d where soil is built by adding different layers of material, reducing the need to till which can break up the healthy networks of mycelium and microbes within. By smothering the invasive species with materials that will break down and feed the soil, we are hopeful that the invasive species will be beat and native species can reign supreme once more!<\/p>\n<p>Tools, gloves and instructions will be\u00a0provided.
