Their North American<br>populations took a huge dive during the 18 th and 19 th centuries because of overharvesting for<br>their fur and castor. Human-caused changes to the lands and waters exacerbated their decline.<br>However, these rodents are ecosystem engineers \u2013 a species that causes greater-than-usual<br>effects throughout the ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>How do beavers benefit ecosystems?<\/strong><br>Beaver dams create wetlands that provide ecosystem services like water retention, flood<br>prevention, and pollutant filtration. Wetlands behind beaver dams can also create rearing<br>habitat for juvenile salmonids and benefit other human and more-than-human species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>Beaver Dam Analogs<\/strong><br>Restoration uses the reference condition approach, and one of the teachers practitioners look<br>to is the humble beaver.
