{"id":5941,"date":"2019-04-18T13:20:18","date_gmt":"2019-04-18T19:20:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chapter.ser.org\/westerncanada\/?p=5941"},"modified":"2019-04-26T11:15:07","modified_gmt":"2019-04-26T17:15:07","slug":"creating-a-buzz-native-bee-restoration-in-calgary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chapter.ser.org\/westerncanada\/2019\/04\/18\/creating-a-buzz-native-bee-restoration-in-calgary\/","title":{"rendered":"Creating a Buzz: Native Bee Restoration in Calgary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5943 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/chapter.ser.org\/westerncanada\/files\/2019\/04\/IMG_6057_web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chapter.ser.org\/westerncanada\/files\/2019\/04\/IMG_6057_web.jpg 550w, https:\/\/chapter.ser.org\/westerncanada\/files\/2019\/04\/IMG_6057_web-150x90.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Researchers working with The City of Calgary recently made an exciting discovery on a roadside boulevard in the city, proving true the old adage, \u201cif you build plant it, they will come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As part of Calgary\u2019s naturalization initiative, native flowers that provide habitat for pollinators were planted, creating a \u201cpollinator corridor\u201d along Canyon Meadows Drive in the southeast quadrant of the city. It was in this corridor last summer that <a href=\"http:\/\/ecologics.ucalgary.ca\/lab\/lincoln-best\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lincoln Best<\/a>, a pollinator expert, collected specimens to monitor the project\u2019s benefit to pollinators.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In February 2019, he confirmed the identity of one specimen to be a native species of bee called the <a href=\"https:\/\/seeds.ca\/d\/?t=cc3ccf2900003850\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gypsy Cuckoo Bumble Bee<\/a> (<em>Bombus bohemicus<\/em>), which is listed as endangered in Canada under the Species at Risk Act.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So, how did this project woo the Gypsy Cuckoo to Calgary? \u201cAt its core, the project was about re-introducing native plant species and creating habitat that appeals to pollinators, and bees, specifically,\u201d says David Misfeldt, Boulevard Technician and the project manager.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The team began by seeding 0.6 hectares of median along Canyon Meadows Drive with a mix of mostly native, salt-tolerant grasses and wildflowers. \u201cFlower beds included native plants that bloom throughout the season to attract as many native bee species as possible,\u201d says Jenna Cross, Parks Ecologist and the project\u2019s vegetation expert. Since some native bees are only attracted to a single species of flower, studies are ongoing to learn which flowers they are attracted to.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, numerous types of housing and nesting sites for native pollinators were installed. These habitat enhancements include a sand bed for ground-nesting mason bees, numerous structures designed to provide habitat for cavity nesting bees, an interactive leaf-cutter bee display, bumble bee houses and associated interpretive signage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The main flower bed is the central feature built in the shape of a flower (visible from Google Earth). An important aspect that will keep the maintenance low in these flower beds is the use of a seeded ground cover instead of mulch.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This project was also an exercise in environmentally friendly construction, using recycled materials that would have otherwise made their way to the landfill.
