SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Restoring Interactions – Examining the Translational Role Symbiotic Fungi Can Have in Restoring Plant Communities
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, April 19\, 2022\n11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. PDT / 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. MDT \nIn the midst of increased ecosystem degradation and the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration\, it is important that we continually evaluate our restoration practices. Restoration practices generally have a taxonomic bias towards plant species and communities. However\, by focusing on a single organismal group\, restoration outcomes are often inconsistent and rarely leads to the reestablishment of target ecosystems or their services. One important factor that is often overlooked are plant interactions with fungal symbionts. This is a considerable oversight\, as a multitude of studies have documented the important role symbiotic fungi have on plant functioning and plant community assembly. This talk will examine two potential roles that plant-fungal symbionts can serve in ecological restoration: as indicators of the state of recovery and an ecosystem component that can be manipulated to improve restoration outcomes. \nSpeaker: Dr. Cameron Egan (Okanagan College) \nCameron is a microbial ecologist interested in plant associated fungal symbionts. He completed his PhD at UBC Okanagan in 2017 under the supervision of John Klironomos\, where he examined biogeographic patterns of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal communities across different biomes and ecoregions of North America\, while simultaneously developing molecular methods and bioinformatic tools to examine fungal diversity in associating with plant roots and in the soil. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa to work with Nicole Hynson\, where he examined the applied role of plant-fungal symbionts throughout the Hawaiian archipelago (some of which he’ll be presenting today). \nSince 2019 he has been a faculty member in the biology department at Okanagan College where his teaching focuses include botany and ecology. His research continues to focus on the interaction between mycorrhizal fungi and plants\, examining both fundamental and applied aspects of the mycorrhizal symbiosis.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Prescribed Fire - A Tool for Grassland Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, March 21\, 2022\n11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. PDT / 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. MDT \nNative grasslands require periodic disturbance to maintain ecological integrity. Typical disturbances are from fire and grazing\, both of which have been removed or suppressed from many grasslands\, particularly near cities. Grasslands are resilient to fire and normally do not sustain long-term damage\, however there are a range of short-term fire effects that will affect both grassland productivity and species diversity. These short-term effects include 1) enhancement of diversity by thatch reduction\, suppression of competitive species\, and fire-induced germination. My research program examines the role of fire in grasslands\, including the reintroduction of fire to conservation grasslands. In this webinar I will discuss fire impacts on grasslands and my experiences working with conservation agencies to safely reintroduce fire. \nSpeaker: Dr. Eric Lamb – Associate Professor\, Department of Plant Science at University of Saskatchewan. \nDr. Eric Lamb is an Associate Professor in the Department of Plant Science\, University of Saskatchewan. He is a plant ecologist with expertise and research interests in rangeland ecology and management\, the development of complex forage mixtures\, statistical ecology\, and plant-soil interactions. He holds a BSc. from UBC\, and MSc. from Lakehead University\, and a PhD. in grassland ecology from the University of Alberta. He has successfully supervised or co-supervised more than 10 graduate students and has published more than 70 peer reviewed papers including papers in leading journals such as Ecology\, Journal of Ecology\, and Rangeland Ecology and Management. Dr. Lamb’s research is currently focussed on plant-soil interactions and grassland fire ecology. Current projects include a collaboration with the Nature Conservancy on the reintroduction of fire at Old Man on His Back\, and a project examining the recovery of rangeland productivity after the 2017 Hilda – Bursta fires.

SUMMARY:Fall Creek Bull Trout Habitat Restoration Workday
DESCRIPTION:Join Trout Unlimited Canada (TUC) for a riparian restoration project along Fall Creek in west-central Alberta. The project involves planting willow plugs adjacent to Fall Creek. This is a great opportunity to help learn about bioengineering and riparian restoration\, and help improve the health of Fall Creek\, an important Bull Trout stream in the Ram River watershed. \nThe goal of the project is to add deep-rooted\, native woody plants along the creek bank to help add strength to the soils\, stabilize the bank\, and prevent excess erosion. Willow planting is a bioengineering technique which helps speed up recovery of disturbed sites like this. \nFall Creek is a tributary to the Ram River and is an important stream for native Bull Trout. Extensive off-highway vehicle (OHV) use in and around Fall Creek had damaged the riparian habitat and even diverted water flow from the natural channel into the OHV trail increasing erosion and sedimentation in the stream. By decomissioning the undesignated OHV trails and completing extensive bioengineering and tree planting\, TUC and Alberta Environment and Parks are working to restore the overall health of Fall Creek to improve the health of the Bull Trout population. \nLunch and water will be provided (please bring a refillable water bottle). All tools and equipment will be provided; please dress appropriately for field work. \nThe meeting location will be at the Tim Hortons in Rocky Mountain House (4403 41 Ave\, Rocky Mountain House\, AB T4T 1A6). We will then carpool to the site.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR - Maintaining quail and grassland bird habitat in the agricultural landscape: CP33 - Habitat Buffers for Upland Birds
DESCRIPTION:Northern bobwhite quail and many other grassland bird species have experienced significant population declines over the last several decades. Loss of native grassland habitat is one of the primary causes of these declines. The CP33 – Habitat Buffers for Upland Birds is a Continuous Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) practice that provides nesting and brooding habitat for quail and other grassland birds on less productive cropland field margins. The CP33 buffer practice can help maintain important native grassland habitat within an agricultural landscape. This webinar will discuss the CP33 practice requirements\, their importance on the landscape and how best to establish\, manage and maintain the habitat quality for quail and grassland birds learn more here… \nPresenters/Authors:\nLisa Potter\, Private Land Programs Supervisor\, Farm Bill Coordinator\, Missouri Dept. of Conservation

SUMMARY:Webinar: Estuaries
DESCRIPTION:Estuaries are amongst Canada’s rarest and most productive habitats. The dynamic nature of estuaries makes them a hotspot for biodiversity and they are also a migratory stopover habitat both for species moving from the ocean into rivers and for bird species traveling north/south along the coast. Yet the very dynamism that results in such natural productivity has produced a jurisdictional quagmire resulting in very limited protection for these vital elements of Canada’s rivers. \nOur Living Waters is pleased to partner with Bird Studies Canada and Nature Canada to bring you three leaders working on estuary conservation in BC\, Dr. Jonathan Moore\, Dr. Tara Martin and lawyer Deborah Carlson. These three leaders will share their thoughts on why estuaries are so important\, how estuaries function\, some of the threats to the Fraser estuary and ideas on potential measures that can be taken to conserve these ecosystems. \nThis event is a virtual event and will take place online at 11am PT / 2pm ET / 3pm AT. \n\n\nEvent Details\nJul 11\, 2018\n11:00 AM – 12:30 PM

SUMMARY:Webinar: Regenerating the Diversity of Life in Soils
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will explore how the evolution of diverse lifeforms has shaped this planet and how we can co-opt the biological communities in soil that evolved over the last 500 million years. Methods to restore microbial diversity in our soils include: increasing soil fertility\, crop productivity\, and profitability in farms and rangeland. Metagenomics and metatranscriptomics are giving us a new way to look at soil microbiota and increasing our ability to understand how soil microbiology helps to define the essence of soil health. Also discussed in the webinar will be the use of a static composting process to produce high quality fungal dominant compost that can be used to inoculate soils and seeds to help restore microbial biodiversity and function to soils of agroecosystems.
