SUMMARY:Predator-Prey Dynamics Conference
DESCRIPTION:Predator-Prey Dynamics: From Theory to Management conference\nPredation is one of the most fundamental interactions in ecology because it is a primary mechanism of energy transfer among trophic levels. The effects of predation on prey populations are continually debated in the literature\, even within a specific study system. Is predation compensatory (i.e. animals would have died anyway\, were they not eaten)\, is it limiting (does it reduce the number of prey)\, or even regulating (is it dependent on the density of prey)? And how do we integrate new ideas\, such as non-lethal effects of predation\, with the more classical view of predation? An upcoming Columbia Mountains Institute conference will address these questions and others. It will be an excellent opportunity for scientists\, managers\, students\, hunters\, and guide-outfitters to learn about some of the current thinking on predator-prey interactions for mammals and birds. \nThe conference will include speakers and a poster session addressing terrestrial predator-prey systems as well as a training workshop\, where participants can learn how to build and run basic predator-prey models (e.g.\, using Excel or R). Real world examples from the Kootenays and elsewhere in North America will be presented. \nMore Information

SUMMARY:Statistics Course: Introduction to Bayesian Methods for Ecologists
DESCRIPTION:The Columbia Mountains Institute of Applied Ecology presents: An Introduction to Bayesian Methods for Ecologists \n\n\nInstructor: Dr. Carl Schwartz\, Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science\, Simon Fraser University. \nCourse description \n\nBayesian methods supplement the standard analysis methods such as regression\, ANOVA\, and generalized linear models. They are helpful in two general situations. First\, when information from a number of studies is to be merged together. Second\, there are certain problems that are “hard” to do using standard methods. For example\, dealing with censored data in regression\, or random effects in logistic regression. This course will present an overview of the use of Bayesian methods in ecology. \nPre-Requisites:\nSound understanding of basic regression and ANOVA. For example\, you should be able to write down the full statistical model for a linear regression. Have you run a logistic regression before? Some familiarity with R will be helpful as we will use R to access OpenBugs/JAGS after learning the basics.\n \nDetails and registration are at www.cmiae.org \nLast date to register is October 13\, 2015\nRegister early.  Class size is limited to 16 students

SUMMARY:Special Lectures: Experimental Disturbance Ecology and The Ecology of Landslides (BC)
DESCRIPTION:The University of Northern British Columbia Natural Resources and Environmental Studies Institute be hosting a Special Lecture. All are welcome to attend! A recording will be uploaded to NRESi’s video archive following the presentation. \nTwo special guests will showcase some of their research: \nExperimental Disturbance Ecology: Extreme Weather Events and Ecosystem Functions – Dr. Anke Jentsch\, University of Bayreuth\, Germany \nPresentation Abstract: \nStudying the effects of extreme climatic events such as drought\, heat waves and heavy rain spells on biodiversity and ecosystem functions is one of the most important facets of experimental disturbance ecology and climate change research. In particular\, primary production of grassland vegetation is amounting to the common currency in field experiments worldwide. Rarely\, however\, are multiple ecosystem functions measured in a single study\, in order to address general patterns across different categories of responses to climate extremes. Additionally\, new approaches include coordinated distributed experiments and surveys\, in which a network of scientists or sites apply a standardized research design to tackle questions across gradients and global hypotheses in ecology using the power of replication distributed geographically. \n  \nThe Ecology of Landslides – Dr. Lawrence Walker\, University of Nevada\, Las Vegas \nPresentation Abstract: \nLandslide ecology is an emerging discipline that examines the post-erosion environment. It addresses ecosystem\, population\, community\, and restoration topics\, thereby clarifying the role of spatial heterogeneity at landscape levels in maintaining biodiversity and landslide impacts on carbon sequestration. Landslides\, often of anthropogenic origin\, are increasing in frequency so it is imperative to improve our understanding of how ecology can help predict\, mitigate\, and restore unstable slopes. Plant succession integrates many themes of landslide ecology and can be manipulated to improve ecological resiliency and reduce restoration costs. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Duncan - Blue Bird Survey and Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Bring your binoculars and help survey the Cowichan Valley for returning western bluebirds (Sialia mexicana)! Once common in Garry oak meadows and savannahs throughout the Salish Sea area\, the western bluebird population in British Columbia became extirpated (locally extinct) in 1995. Habitat loss and competition for nest holes with exotic birds are among the reasons for the loss of these tropical-looking songbirds. \n\nTheir sweet song has inspired many to help give them another chance. Bring Back the Bluebirds is part of an international effort to re-establish a breeding population of these colourful little songbirds\, which call our endangered Garry oak ecosystems home. \nThe project began in 2012 and the translocation of up to ten pairs of bluebirds\, from healthy populations in Washington\, will continue until 2016. So far every spring we have seen returning adults and juvenile bluebirds! \nCome and learn how to identify western bluebirds\, how to protect and restore their habitat and hopefully spot one of these beautiful creatures returning home. \nGuest Speaker: \nJemma Green.\nIn the spring of 2014 Jemma joined the team at GOERT (Garry Oak Ecosystem Recovery Team) to work full time as a Western Bluebird Technician in the Cowichan Valley.  She now coordinates the project and is busy planning for the next breeding season. \n\nRegistration & More Information

SUMMARY:Duncan - Blue Bird Survey & Workshop

SUMMARY:Population Issues at Geographic Range Edges (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Karen Hodges\, Associate Biology at the University of British Columbia Okanagan \nThe geographic ranges of species are seldom static\, but the causes for the edges of ranges are often unclear. Many conservation laws and policies are structured in ways that protect range edge populations\, especially if the range periphery occurs in one jurisdiction\, but the main range is elsewhere (as occurs in BC’s sage-steppe habitats in the Okanagan and the Vancouver Island garry oak ecosystems). Simultaneously\, as global warming continues\, many northern peripheral populations are acting as leading edges of range expansion. In this talk\, I examine whether we have sufficient biological understanding of range edge populations\, and the causes of range edges\, to be able to predict which peripheral populations are genuinely valuable enough to warrant separate conservation attention or to predict which range edge populations might expand or contract. In so doing\, I examine some conservation policy and data gaps\, and I derive a possible classification of range edge types. \nTo participate remotely on Livestream or Elluminate: http://www.unbc.ca/nres/nresi_webcast.html
