DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday August 27\, from 3:00-5:00pm for a special tour of two Mile High Flood District stream improvement projects within the Denver Metro Area\, followed by a happy hour sponsored by the Society for Ecological Restoration at the Green Valley Beer Garden. The site tours will run approximately 2 hours\, followed by the happy hour with complementary appetizers and table fare. We will be joined by two special guests from MHFD\, David Skoudas the Education and Outreach Director\, and KristiLee Halpin\, an Environmental Specialist. \nRegistration is required and limited to 35 people. Click on the link below to register for this event!  \n\nThe schedule of events begins with a tour of the improvements recently completed in spring 2025 as part of Phase 2 of the Uvalda Tributary to Irondale Drainageway Improvement Project. We will meet at the Uvalda Trailhead on the north side of the intersection of 56th Avenue and Uvalda Street in Denver. There is some trailhead parking\, and additional parking in the neighborhood south of 56th Avenue. \nFollowing the Uvalda site\, we will convene at First Creek Park at 18874 Elmendorf Dr\, Denver\, CO 80249\, for a tour of the First Creek Park Project which transitioned into long term maintenance in 2023. There should be ample street parking nearby. \n\n\n\nUvalda Tributary to Irondale Drainageway Improvements Phase 2 (Project Center Point: 39.796890\, -104.835554) \n\nDrainage improvements designed to increase channel capacity and reduce flood risk within a residential neighborhood.\nReplacement of a concrete-lined channel with a natural channel-bottom system\, incorporating enhancements that improve community value and ecological function.\nSuccessful design and construction within a constrained urban corridor\, requiring coordination with numerous existing utilities and site constraints.\nImproved connectivity to the adjacent greenway and trail system.\nIncreased green space and enhanced aesthetics within the surrounding residential neighborhood.\nConstruction was completed in Spring 2025\, and the site is currently undergoing vegetation establishment and monitoring.\n\nFirst Creek Park (Project Center Point: 39.794544\, -104.768531) \n\nImprovements to increase channel capacity\nEnhanced community value by establishment of First Creek Park with dedicated nature play features\, including low water crossing to access the creek\nConstruction was completed in 2019\, and the site was transitioned to long-term maintenance in 2023.\n\n\n\nThe mission of the Mile High Flood District is to protect people\, property\, and our environment through preservation\, mitigation\, and education. She brings extensive experience in stream restoration\, spanning ecological design\, environmental permitting\, and vegetation establishment\, with a focus on achieving high-functioning\, low-maintenance systems with long-term resilience. KristiLee combines technical expertise with applied problem-solving and collaboration to advance sustainable\, adaptive approaches to watershed and stormwater management.\nDavid Skuodas\nDavid Skuodas is the Education and Outreach Director at the Mile High Flood District\, where he focuses on industry education\, advocating for smart policy and infrastructure funding\, and effective community engagement.  Prior to this role\, Dave worked for 25 years on both the private and public sides to deliver capital construction projects along Denver’s urban waterways. DESCRIPTION:Kelly Kindscher\, Ph.D.\, Ecologist\, Ethnobotanist\, Kansas Biological Survey & Center for Ecological Research\, will provide a presentation about the new edition of his book “Edible Wild Plants of the Prairie – An Ethnobotanical Guide.” \nKelly Kindscher is best known as a passionate advocate for native plants\, native landscapes\, and wild places. His research is focused on ethnobotany\, native plants\, native prairies\, prairie and wetland restoration\, and regional plant communities. He is a conservationist\, teacher\, mentor\, professional wetland scientist\, and environmental problem solver. He is an author of books on edible and medicinal plants and has published over 130 publications. Kelly is the senior scientist at the Kansas Biological Survey\, which is his research home\, and a professor in the Environmental Studies Program at the University of Kansas (KU)\, where he mentors students and teaches Ethnobotany and the program’s senior Capstone course. He is currently working with the Arikara and Osage Tribal Nations on ethnobotany projects\, with the US Forest Service on developing restoration projects in the Midwest\, expanding the USDA NRCS database to include more ethnobotany\, and continues to study Echinacea and other medicinal plants. \n About the book\, Edible Wild Plants of the Prairie—an ethnobotanical guide (new edition) \nThis book is about all the native prairie plants that have been used as food by Native Americans. They are of interest today due to their history\, ecology\, conservation\, use in restoration\, and as wild foods.  This book has 433 pages (from 276 in the first edition) and documentation for 187 prairie species as food\, but really 242 species\, identified with related species of plums\, wild onions\, etc.\, all included. The new edition has color photos and maps (previous editions had black and white line drawings). The original 1986 version had only 123 species.   \nThe wild plants in this book tell stories of land\, people\, and food. As renowned botanist Kelly Kindscher guides us through over one hundred edible plants in this beautiful field guide\, we find that foraging has always been an important part of prairie life. Before colonization\, Native American women were the primary gatherers of wild plants\, which were an abundant\, sustainable\, and delicious feature of Indigenous diets. Colonizers reduced the significance of wild plants in prairie life as they relocated Native peoples and imposed their agrarian culture on the land\, but these Indigenous foodways were never truly lost. In the recent past\, foraging has become a tremendously popular way for many people to connect with the earth\, promote sustainability\, and revive and honor cultural food traditions. \nIn this beautifully illustrated new edition with color photos\, Kindscher explores 187 wild plants of the prairie\, offering information about habitat\, food use\, and cultivation. SUMMARY:SER-SPLT-CoNPS Restoration Tour and Rare Plant Bioblitz
DESCRIPTION:Join the Southern Plains Land Trust (SPLT) for a two-day field event including a restoration tour and rare plant bioblitz at SPLT preserves in Southeast Colorado! SPLT is a grassland conservation nonprofit whose mission is to create and rewild a network of shortgrass prairie preserves across the Southern Plains. SPLT protects more than 60\,000 acres and has rewilded bison\, prairie dogs\, and black-footed ferrets to their preserves. \nSPLT also conducts comprehensive ecological restoration\, which will be the partial focus of this field tour. Attendees will spend one day touring and discussing example restoration projects across two SPLT preserves (Heartland Ranch and Raven’s Nest)\, including willow/cottonwood revegetation\, low-tech process-based restoration (LTPBR)\, fence removal and replacement with wildlife-friendly fencing\, native re-seeding and pollinator restoration plots\, and much more! \nOn day 2\, attendees will participate in a rare plant bioblitz\, with a particular focus on rocky outcrop microhabitats and the incredibly rare and poorly understood Dwarf Milkweed (Asclepias uncialis). Our rare plant work contributes to the Statewide Natural Heritage Survey\, a community science initiative to support the Colorado Conservation Data Explorer (CODEX) \nLogistics: Maximum attendance = 15. Participants are welcome to come for one day or stay for both. Camping accommodations are available at Heartland Ranch and include access to the internet\, cooking equipment\, a refrigerator for food storage\, and a portable toilet. This year’s themes are: restoration following surface disturbance\, native seeds and seed supply\, invasive annual grasses\, and conifer encroachment. \nClick here to subscribe for updates \n (or contact Anika Mahoney\, Restoration Technician.      anika.mahoney@tnc.org \n\n  WORKING UP TO SER2025 BUT LOOKING BEYOND\n\nGiven our investment in the SER 2025 Conference\, the Chapter Board has emphasized outreach over the past year.  We have done member events including Pinedale WY\, and also tag-teamed with other organizations to have information tables at their meetings\, such as the Colorado Native Plant Society (Durango) and Colorado Conservation Districts (Colo Springs).  We will be continue to do this to encourage attendance at the conference by not only members but other individuals or groups who are involved in restoration work but haven’t joined SER  – yet.  The Conference is going to be fantastic\, but it is not an end to itself.   I am seeing it as a great way to explore areas that we could develop as a chapter.  These are \nBuilding Restoration Partnerships \nBuilding on one of Brock’s initiatives during his term as president\, we are going to work harder at developing partnerships with organizations that are implementing and directing ecological restoration.  This is an effective way of raising awareness\, encouraging sound restoration practices and maintaining communications with you as members AND a much broader audience.  I see it as a path towards working with these partners to conduct periodic Restoration Partnering Workshops where we could explore and kickstart work on issues such as common disturbance agents\, focal ecosystems or sub-regions within the Chapter\, science needs\, and coordination across organizations\, or even other SER Chapter areas.  We aren’t looking for formal agreements\, but avenues to mutually promote each other’s work.  The direction of these partnerships will be a product of the groups involved.  If you want to suggest your company\, organization\, or agency to be involved\, contact Greg!   \nMicro-communities\nNot in the formal sense described at https://www.ser.org/page/microcommunities\,  but along the same lines.  In many informal conversations I have had with members since I joined the Board in ’22\, many of you have suggested things you are interested in (related to restoration) and / or like to see the chapter engaged in.  First response is\, the Chapter is US!!  Every one of us has a lot to juggle and it is great that you are contributing as members – just by doing the great work you do.  But what are some other things we could try to help us achieve some of our Chapter objectives?  \nI am proposing this:  For non-Board members\, identify your interest in any of these topics and we will connect you with other members interested.  We will focus on activities that have more than a couple of folks expressing interest.  Some basic instructions are: \n\nDevelop the link to ecological restoration and chapter objectives\nDraft some goals\, outcomes and objectives of what we want and could do with this topic – we need to be clear about the Chapter’s role and obligation.\nHave at least one member of your group present out at the Chapter meeting we will have as part of SER 2025\n\nFor any of tese\, we will connect you with partners who are more directly involved in the topic area.  Based on how these develop\, we can explore turning these into a Sub-Committee per our Charter\, and / or propose a new Committee for the Chapter. \nI have listed a number of topics raised by members\, and / or topics I see as relevant strategies to help us with our mission to raise awareness\, support members\, and promote high quality restoration.   Feel free to suggest others!! \n\n\n\nYouth\nEducation programs with NGOs\, Protected Areas\, Extension \n\n\nNative Plant Material Coordination\nWhat level could we engage in?  Who are the users and what are the needs?  \n\n\nRecognizing communities & partners\nThis came from a couple of different angles.  Ideas for thanking partners who host events. Ideas for acknowledging work done by our restoration partners\n\n\nBridge to other disciplines\nBy resource discipline and by program area\, so hydrologists\, social scientists\, soil scientists\, and wetland specialists\, range managers\n\n\nMentoring\nHow could we set this up?  Need to think through time and effort commitments\, volunteer or reimbursed? Quality Control\n\n\nResearcher-Practitioner Connections\nThis could be as simple as using SER Connect\, but a plan would help!\n\n\nTrainings\nInterest in monitoring training has been raised.  Suggest others like emerging hardware and software technologies\, seed treatments….  OK to generate a big wish list!\n\n\nFundraising\nIf anything\, we would like to be seen as a group that can facilitate restoration – all facets.  Being able to contribute cash to support partner efforts would help.  So\, not looking for donations but ideas for how we can identify and work with funding sources.\n\n\nRestoration and Climate – related Adaptation\nDamaged sites are great places to test adaptation strategies.  Having better information on data tools\, decision frameworks and case studies\, or chapter-specific ecosystem scenarios will promote field testing by practitioners.\n\n\nExpanding coverage\nIdeas include regional co-chairs for the Outreach Committee\n\n\n\nNOT YET BUT SOON:   Students and Emerging Professionals – we are waiting on developments this spring with SER’s uber committee that should facilitate chapter level efforts. \nPlease indicate your interest in any of these\, or make suggestions through SER Connect! \nQuestions?  (Likely).  Contact Greg Eckert at gregeckert1@gmail.com

Between 2009 and 2011\, more than two miles of river bank were treated using tree root wads\, wood\, rocks\, and plants to reduce sedimentation\, improve fish habitat\, and save the greenbelt path from undercutting. Dr. Tony Hoch (Director and Water Quality Specialist\, Laramie Rivers Conservation District) will talk about this successful community and inter-agency collaboration\, which he oversaw from 2009 to 2011.
