River Restoration Field Trip – White River – Vermont – July 9th

Please join the Society for Ecological Restoration – New England Chapter on a field trip to visit an exciting river restoration project on the West Branch of the White River in Rochester, Vermont.  Lead by Greg Russ, Project Manager for the White River Partnership, we will learn about the innovative efforts to restore the river’s geomorphic processes and fish and aquatic organism habitat while also improving recreational opportunities along this stretch of river.  This river was severely impacted by unauthorized gravel mining following Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 that degraded its habitat value and functioning.  In response, during 2014 and 2015, seven engineered log jam structures were placed in/along the banks of the West Branch, stream dimensions and sinuosity were reformed, side channels re-opened, and wetland habitat created.

Project partners included the Green Mountain National Forest, multiple private landowners, White River Partnership, Trout Unlimited, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Vermont Agency of Transportation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Harvey’s Excavating Project.

Learn all about this exciting project with a river restoration expert.

Hope you can join us!  Bring a picnic and enjoy the river following the field trip.  Questions? Email Ryan Crehan at ryan_crehan@fws.gov or call 802 662-5309 or check https://serchapter2018.wpengine.com/newengland/.
