Participating federal agencies are committed to implement a<br \/>\nscience-based \u201cadaptive management framework\u201d to prioritize ecosystem<br \/>\nproblems to be targeted, select projects to address the problems, and assess<br \/>\nthe effectiveness of projects that are carried out. The framework describes<br \/>\nan iterative process of planning, project implementation, monitoring of<br \/>\nrestoration effectiveness and ecosystem health, and prioritization of<br \/>\necosystem threats. The framework further outlines a general process by<br \/>\nwhich learning feedbacks should be incorporated into future iterations of<br \/>\nproject selection.<\/p>\n<p>POSITION DESCRIPTION: We seek a postdoctoral research associate to lead<br \/>\ndevelopment of an adaptive approach to the selection of restoration project<br \/>\nportfolios. The research will draw heavily on principles of decision<br \/>\nanalysis, in which the valuation of decision outcomes and the building of<br \/>\nmodels to predict those outcomes are co-equal endeavors. The incumbent will<br \/>\nwork with decision stakeholders from the participating agencies to frame the<br \/>\ndecision making context, identify restoration priorities, characterize<br \/>\nuncertainties in predicting project outcomes, and design systems of<br \/>\nmonitoring to assess satisfaction of project goals. The incumbent\u2019s work<br \/>\nwill focus on the western basin of Lake Erie, the pilot geography for this<br \/>\neffort. This project will result in protocols and technical tools for the<br \/>\nselection of projects, monitoring designs to focus learning feedbacks into<br \/>\ndecision making, and publications to synthesize the work. The incumbent<br \/>\nwill work under the direction of Dr. Clint Moore (USGS, Georgia Cooperative<br \/>\nFish and Wildlife Research Unit,<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/www.coopunits.org\/Georgia\/People\/Clinton_Moore) and will work closely<br \/>\nwith other members of the research team, Dr. Peter Esselman (USGS \u2013 Great<br \/>\nLakes Science Center) and Dr. Seth Guikema (University of Michigan,<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/ioe-guikema.engin.umich.edu).<\/p>\n<p>QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in ecology, natural<br \/>\nresource management, biometrics, natural resource economics, applied<br \/>\nmathematics, statistics, operations research, or related field. Candidates<br \/>\nshould be able to demonstrate through study, work experience, or<br \/>\npublications the application of decision analysis to problems in natural<br \/>\nresources management. Competitive candidates will have one or more of the<br \/>\nfollowing qualifications: a background in structured decision making and\/or<br \/>\nadaptive management, knowledge of ecosystem restoration, skills and<br \/>\nexperience with stakeholder workshops and facilitation, and facility in<br \/>\nmodeling, estimation, and optimization. The candidate must have excellent<br \/>\nwriting and interpersonal communication skills, and he\/she must demonstrate<br \/>\ncommitment to timely completion of deliverables, commitment to publication<br \/>\nof results in peer-reviewed outlets, and strong potential to work<br \/>\ncollaboratively with multiple agencies on a highly visible research topic.<br \/>\nOccasional travel to stakeholder meetings and scientific conferences is<br \/>\nrequired. The candidate will be employed by the Georgia Cooperative Fish and<br \/>\nWildlife Research Unit at the University of Georgia and based in Athens GA<br \/>\nduring part of the year (up to 2 months) or periodically throughout the year<br \/>\n(depending on work load). The need for a high degree of contact and<br \/>\nface-to-face collaboration with USGS and other partner agencies requires<br \/>\nthat the candidate work from the USGS \u2013 Great Lakes Science Center in Ann<br \/>\nArbor, MI for the remaining 9-10 months of the year. The candidate selected<br \/>\nfor the position must be able to meet eligibility requirements for work in<br \/>\nthe United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and<br \/>\ncontinue working legally for the proposed term of the appointment.<\/p>\n<p>COMPENSATION: This is a full-time, fixed-term, non-tenure-track<br \/>\nappointment for up to 18 months. Extension of the appointment beyond 12<br \/>\nmonths is possible depending on funding availability and satisfactory<br \/>\nperformance of the candidate.
