This year\u2019s meeting theme is <strong><em>Overcoming Challenges to Ecological Restoration in the 21st Century<\/em><\/strong>. Doug is well known through the United States as an accomplished conservation biologist and botanist.<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Opening Plenary Session<\/strong><\/b> \u2013 <strong>overcoming future challenges for ecological restoration<\/strong>. Includes speakers from The Nature Conservancy (John Shuey, Ellen Jacquart), Michigan State University (Lars Brudvig), and The Restoration Ecology Lab (Steve Glass) to provide a diversity of perspectives on the challenges for ecological restoration and potential strategies for overcoming these challenges to ensure the success of future restoration efforts in the Midwestern United States.<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Special Joint Plenary Session and Tour<\/strong><\/b> \u2013 <em>Campus-Community Partnerships for Restoration, Research and Education<\/em>. Presentations by Indiana University scientists and restoration practitioners on the challenges and successes of campus restoration projects and associated research, teaching and outreach activities. Followed by tours highlighting forest and wetland restoration efforts on campus and on the Indiana University Research &amp; Teaching Preserve.<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Three Contributed Symposia<\/strong><\/b> \u2013 Attendees will have the choice of three symposia: 1) Soil Microbes in Ecological Restoration; 2) Restoration in Rights-of-Way \u2013 a Discussion About Improving Habitat and Creating connectivity in 21st Century Landscapes; and 3) Restoration and Management in Ravines and Steep Forestland.<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Two Workshops<\/strong><\/b> \u2013 Attendees will have the choice of two workshops: 1) Sedge (<em>Carex<\/em> spp) Identification and 2) Employing Effective Quality Assurance Strategies in the 21st Century \u2013 A Workshop on Best Practices in Conducting Data Quality Control Checks in Ecorestoration Projects.<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Two Field Trips<\/strong><\/b> \u2013 Choose one of two field trips: 1) Large Scale Shallow Wetland and Native Grass Prairie Restoration and 2) Increasing Ecological Resilience in Southern Indiana Forests.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_273\" style=\"width: 442px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-273\" class=\" size-full wp-image-273 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/restorationnewsmidwest.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/02\/goosepondfieldtrip1-sm.jpg\" alt=\"GoosePondFieldTrip1-sm\" width=\"432\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chapter.ser.org\/midwestgreatlakes\/files\/2016\/02\/goosepondfieldtrip1-sm.jpg 432w, https:\/\/chapter.ser.org\/midwestgreatlakes\/files\/2016\/02\/goosepondfieldtrip1-sm-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chapter.ser.org\/midwestgreatlakes\/files\/2016\/02\/goosepondfieldtrip1-sm-189x124.jpg 189w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-273\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Field Trip Site:\u00a0 Indiana DNR Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>63 Contributed Oral and Poster Presentations<\/strong><\/b> \u2013 Presenters from nine states (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin, Missouri, Kentucky) and Bogota, Columbia will share their experiences involving prairie, forest, savanna, stream, wetland, and lake restoration.
