More information at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/iowarivers.org\/legislative\/river-restoration\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/iowarivers.org\/legislative\/river-restoration\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin: \u00a0<\/strong>Researchers have implemented three projects to evaluate the potential for harvesting\u00a0<em>Typha, Phragmites<\/em>, and\/or<em> Phalarus<\/em>\u00a0for use as low-carbon green energy. \u00a0Details at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/greatlakesphragmites.net\/blog\/restoration-through-biomass-utilization\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/greatlakesphragmites.net\/blog\/restoration-through-biomass-utilization\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wisconsin: \u00a0<\/strong>NOAA has proposed an 875 square mile\u00a0portion of Lake Michigan as a new Wisconsin-Lake Michigan national marine sanctuary. \u00a0Public comments can be submitted through January 15th. \u00a0More information is available at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sanctuaries.noaa.gov\/wisconsin\/\">http:\/\/sanctuaries.noaa.gov\/wisconsin\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wisconsin: \u00a0<\/strong>Congratulations to Travis Olson for receiving the 2015 Annual Wetlands Award from the Wisconsin&#8217;s Wetlands Association. \u00a0Travis received the award for his work as\u00a0the Wetlands and Habitat Restoration Program Coordinator at the Wisconsin Coastal\u00a0Management Program. Visit WWA online at <a href=\"www.wisconsinwetlands.org\" target=\"_blank\">www.wisconsinwetlands.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Indiana, Michigan, \u00a0Minnesota, and Wisconsin:<\/strong> \u00a0US Army Corps of Engineers hosts a website with fact sheets and project updates for several restoration projects throughout the region (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lre.usace.army.mil\/Missions\/CivilWorks\/ProjectManagement\/ProjectInformationSheets.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Project Information Sheets<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michigan:<\/strong> The University of Michigan Water Center is working\u00a0to build a 4-acre fish spawning reef in the Detroit River\u00a0near\u00a0Wyandotte, Michigan. \u00a0More information at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/graham.umich.edu\/water\/news\/science-action-restoring-fish-habitat\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/graham.umich.edu\/water\/news\/science-action-restoring-fish-habitat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michigan: \u00a0<\/strong>Several new projects will be funded in\/near the Clinton River under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, as announced by USEPA:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Clinton River Corridor Project &#8211; City of Sterling Heights ($4,500,000) will\u00a0improve habitat diversity along a nine-mile section of the Clinton River by creating\u00a0riffle-pools, managing woody debris, stabilizing stream banks, controlling invasive\u00a0species and enhancing native vegetation.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Partridge Creek Commons, McBride Drain and Clinton River Spillway Projects\u00a0&#8211; Macomb County ($6,300,000) will restore more than 32,000 linear feet and almost\u00a090 acres of in-stream, streamside and upland habitat. The projects will control\u00a0invasive species, plant native vegetation, stabilize and naturalize the shoreline,\u00a0increase habitat diversity through restoration of riffle and pool complexes, and\u00a0improve habitat connectivity.<\/li>\n<li>Clinton River Spillway Project &#8211; Macomb County ($2,500,000) will restore the\u00a0eastern end of the spillway in partnership with NOAA. The project includes invasive species removal and\u00a0other restoration efforts near the area where the spillway meets Lake St. Clair.<\/li>\n<li>Wolcott Mill Metropark Wetland Project &#8211; Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority\u00a0($335,374) will restore sections of the north branch of the Clinton River floodplain to\u00a0native grassland and forested wetlands as part of a long-term strategy to address\u00a0stormwater impacts to the watershed. This project will help restore native wildlife\u00a0species such as pollinators and grassland birds.<\/li>\n<li>Galloway Wetland Project &#8211; City of Auburn Hills ($140,000) will restore wetlands\u00a0adjacent to Galloway Creek, a key tributary to the Clinton River, in the City of Auburn\u00a0Hills. The project includes removing significant debris that had been previously\u00a0dumped at the project site, allowing for the re-establishment of native wetland\u00a0vegetation that had historically occupied the site. The wetlands will improve habitat\u00a0as well as buffer the impacts of stormwater run-off.<\/li>\n<li>Sylvan Glen Project &#8211; City of Troy ($375,000) will restore 3,500 feet of stream,\u00a0reduce sediment loads from reaching the Clinton River, and improve habitat for\u00a0aquatic life.<\/li>\n<li>Harley Ensign\/Clinton River Mouth Project &#8211; U.S. Army Corps of Engineers\u00a0Interagency Agreement ($2,694,201) will improve fish and wildlife habitat and\u00a0restore former coastal wetland habitat where the Clinton River meets Lake St. Clair.\u00a0This project will control invasive species, establish 14 acres of fish habitat andrestore 4 acres of upland habitat as well as 6,000 feet of shoreline.<\/li>\n<li>Shelby Township Stream Bank Stabilization Project &#8211; U.S. Army Corps of\u00a0Engineers Interagency Agreement ($914,412) will restore the aquatic and\u00a0terrestrial habitat on the main stem of the Clinton River by reducing stream bank\u00a0erosion and re-establishing near-shore habitat.<\/li>\n<li>The Galloway Creek Fish Passage Project &#8211; U.S. Army Corps of Engineers\u00a0Interagency Agreement ($2,202,000) will restore approximately 3,000 linear feet of\u00a0channel and 2 acres of riparian habitat in Galloway Creek, which will improve\u00a0floodplain and in-stream connectivity, increase stream channel stability, provide in-channel aquatic habitat, increase habitat diversity and increase shade for riparian\u00a0wetlands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Happy Friday everyone! \u00a0Restoration practitioners in the Midwest-Great Lakes region have been busy planning, implementing, and celebrating restoration. \u00a0Check out some links from around the region.
