Peschel said in her research award proposal that she is interested specifically in the critical question of whether &#8220;adaptive evolution can proceed at a sufficiently rapid pace to maintain population fitness and demographic stability.&#8221;   The question of species persistence in the age of climate change is especially relevant, Peschel emphasizes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1083\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1083\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1083\" src=\"https:\/\/chapter.ser.org\/midwestgreatlakes\/files\/2017\/06\/img_7884.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7884\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chapter.ser.org\/midwestgreatlakes\/files\/2017\/06\/img_7884.jpg 480w, https:\/\/chapter.ser.org\/midwestgreatlakes\/files\/2017\/06\/img_7884-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1083\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anna Peschel at work in her greenhouse with the subject of her research, <em>Chamaecrista fasciculata (<\/em>Partridge pea). \u00a0Plants will be hand pollinated to produce seed that she will sow into the field this fall.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Peschel&#8217;s will be awarded $1000 by the Midwest Great Lakes Chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration to help support her research. \u00a0This is the third year that a student research award has been offered to student members for work done in the seven-state chapter area. \u00a0 Previous winners include Becky Barak in 2016 and Amy Alstad in 2015.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1087\" style=\"width: 522px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1087\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1087\" src=\"https:\/\/chapter.ser.org\/midwestgreatlakes\/files\/2017\/06\/fullsizerender.jpg\" alt=\"FullSizeRender\" width=\"512\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chapter.ser.org\/midwestgreatlakes\/files\/2017\/06\/fullsizerender.jpg 512w, https:\/\/chapter.ser.org\/midwestgreatlakes\/files\/2017\/06\/fullsizerender-300x254.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1087\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Peschel at the McCarthy Lake WMA in Minnesota, one of her field sites.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Peschel&#8217;s work is focused on the tall grass prairie region of Minnesota that once covered 18 million acres, but now less than two percent remains. \u00a0Peschel says in her research proposal, &#8220;Tallgrass prairie plants are at risk of extinction from climate change unless adaptation by natural selection restores the growth rates of their populations to levels that maintain them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Peschel&#8217;s research will use the annual prairie legume, partridge pea as a focal organism to represent tall grass prairie plants and her research will attempt to determine its &#8220;adaptive capacity along an aridity gradient mimicking environmental conditions predicted to reach eastern Minnesota in 25-30 years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1085\" style=\"width: 266px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1085\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1085\" src=\"https:\/\/chapter.ser.org\/midwestgreatlakes\/files\/2017\/06\/img_2748.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2748\" width=\"256\" height=\"192\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1085\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Precipitation exclusion structures Peschel will employ to mimic drought.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The results of Peschel&#8217;s research will be presented at SER MWGL&#8217;s annual meeting next April in Steven&#8217;s Point, Wisconsin.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anna Peschel, a PhD student at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus, won the award for her research which tackles the persistent and challenging question of local adaptation.
