Scientists in Support for an Ambitious EU Nature Restoration Law
Europe has one of the strongest nature protection legislations in the world. Yet, the European Union’s biodiversity and ecosystems are suffering severe and continuing decline. Previous initiatives to restore large extents of European degraded areas have fallen short of expectations.
The European Commission is working on a new restoration law, with legally binding targets, as part of the Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and the European Green Deal. Europe has the capacity to lead the world by example, making the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration a success, contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and re-connecting people with nature.
The EU restoration law should respond to the environmental crisis at a scale that is commensurate with the magnitude of the challenges. Scientific evidence supports the need to develop and enforce an ambitious law that restores biodiversity and significantly contributes to mitigating climate change and adapting to its impacts while sustaining the supply of ecosystem services and the wellbeing of people.
A Declaration with 12 recommendations was approved at the 12th European Conference on Ecological Restoration (7-10/9/2021), organized by the European Chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration. It calls for the support of European academics and practitioners, individuals, and Institutions, to enable a restoration law that will protect nature and reverse the degradation of ecosystems, turning an environmental challenge into a unique opportunity.
We kindly invite you to co-sign the declaration before the end of October 2021 and to encourage support from your colleagues. If your Institution is willing to adhere to this Declaration with its logo, please contact: info <at> ser-europe.org.
