The Nature Conservancy – PAULSON GRASSLAND CONSERVATION FELLOWSHIP

The Nature Conservancy in South Dakota is looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic college graduate with experience in natural resources, conservation biology, or related field for an 18-month paid Fellowship focused on learning about the ecology of grasslands and gaining experience implementing conservation practices.

Take that next step towards your conservation career.  Over the course of two field seasons and one winter, the Fellowship will provide a wealth of real world experience to supplement your college education. You will not only walk away with a greater understanding of what a career in conservation entails, you will have opportunities to build the experience, skills, and network needed to pursue your professional goals and truly make a difference.

Gain experience working both independently and collaboratively on a variety of projects, such as:

  • Prescribed fire
  • Ecological research and monitoring
  • Invasive species management
  • Grassland restoration
  • Bison and grazing management
  • Outreach and education

Build your resume as you develop skills with:

  • Decision- making
  • Leadership
  • Partnership building
  • Communicating
  • Budgeting and project management
  • Planning, setting, and implementing goals
  • Problem-solving
  • Data entry and analysis

The Fellowship will provide opportunities to spend time with a variety of conservation professionals while attending conferences, meetings, trainings and working on collaborative projects aimed at expanding your professional network and expertise in grassland conservation.

The Fellow will be stationed in the Missouri Coteau of South Dakota and will travel to assist with conservation projects throughout the Dakotas.  Along with researchers, volunteers, and staff, you will be housed at the S. H. Ordway Prairie Preserve near Leola, SD.  The 7800-acre Ordway Prairie Preserve lies in the heart of the Prairie Pothole Region; also referred to as North America’s “Duck Factory” because of its significant breeding habitat for waterfowl.  Ordway Prairie is also the home to one of the Conservancy’s many bison herds.

Application deadline: January 15, 2017.

Fellowship Dates: April 10, 2017 – October 12, 2018
